I feel like I know a lot about health. But I apparently don't... because I learned all about Spinach... stuff I did not know. I was so surprised that I felt immediately compelled to share what I learned: That Spinach actually contains 1/10th of bioavailable iron than what we are told. That is not a lot. That is 90% less iron than what we automatically think. So if you hate Spinach... read on.
I had to google this. I have ALWAYS "known" Spinach is high in iron.
Apparently a long time ago, there was a decimal error when documenting the nutritional content of spinach (I am so not kidding), and it went into print, leading to a mass of teaching error when it comes to this and there is a lot of explanation to back this up.
Basically YES, Spinach is high in iron. But can our body utilize it? Raw? In a salad? NO! My blog is not scientific and I don't have time to get all into it. However, if you search this topic, you can find several websites that actually go into this! Listen ladies, all the nutritionists and docs are telling us to eat spinach and they are being taught that it's the truth, we must eat it for it's iron content, but there are different types of iron and ways our body actually utilizes the iron that we put into our bodies. The real truth is we get a tiny bit of iron from spinach in the end, but we would get a lot more iron from meat.
Truth or Myth Game. What a way to find out how much you don't really know! I am truly humbled.
I found this article that points out all kinds of information about spinach and its shelf life.
